Steam Train on Oil Creek & Titusville, July 14 & 15
Steam locomotives to run again in the valley that changed the world…
The Oil Creek & Titusville Railroad (TITUSVILLE, PA) has announced that on the weekend of July 14 & 15, they will have TWO visiting steam locomotives pulling passenger trains on an expanded schedule.
EACH DAY will see FOUR train trips:
*THREE RUNS on the “Fieldmore Springs Line” which is ex NYC, ex LS&MS (Dunkirk Alleghany Valley & Pittsburgh). This is rare passenger mileage; it is used extensively for freight operations but very rarely for passenger/excursion trains. The line runs through the city of TITUSVILLE to end of track at EAST TITUSVILLE (Fieldmore Springs). The schedule says that the trips will be 1.5 hours long. It is about an 8 miles round trip +/-, but involves seasawing onto and off-of the Main Line to Fieldmore Springs Line.
*ONE REGULAR TRIP from Titusville to Rynd Farm through “The Valley That Changed The World.” This route is ex Conrail, ex PRR Chautauqua Branch (ran between Buffalo & Oil City, PA) and is the OC&T Main Line that sees regular freight and passenger runs. The ‘Valley’ contains the site of the very first oil well ever drilled in 1859 (by Col. Edwin Drake). The entire area experienced a huge oil boom afterwards. Today it is a beautiful PA State Park, with numerous oil-related historic sites, ghost towns, hiking and biking trails, etc. The round trip to Rynd Farm is approx 27 miles and usually lasts about 3 hours, with station stops at Drake Well and Petroleum Center. Rynd Farm is the OC&T’s interchange point with the Western New York & Pennsylvania Railroad.
First Class seating options are available on ALL trips aboard AC&F Heavyweight Coach #1399, dubbed the Cannonball after the Wabash Railroad train the car used to operate on.
The two steam engines scheduled are the Viscose #6, restored and owned by Scott Symans of Dunkirk, New York, and Flagg Coal Co.#75, restored and owned by John and Byron Gramling from Ashley, IN. This is the first time since 1953 that steam locomotives have run through the Valley.
All trips will depart from the Perry Street Station, 409 S. Perry Street, Titusville, PA.
To contact the OC&T, visit their website at http://www.octrr.org/ or call 814-676-1733. They take ticket reservations over the phone during the day.
Adjacent to Perry Street Station is the OC&T Caboose Motel. It will fill up fast.
BILL NIXON adds… OC&T has ALCOs too! two ALCO S2′s (#75 and #85) and an MLW M420W, #3568. (the #85 is owned by the OC&T and the others are owned by the operator, Oil Creek & Titusville Lines (New York & Lake Erie RR).

A TWO-WEEK LONG OUTAGE of our DSL service has finally been resolved. Verizon was less-than-perfect in their handling of our problem, which was triggered by an equipment breakdown. However, thanks to the efforts of some of their individual employees, we’re back online and plan to stay that way.
All during that ‘endless’ two weeks, several of our contributing photographers have been keeping their lenses pointed at Norfolk Southern’s Heritage units. But first let’s take a look at Norfolk Southern’s OFFICE CAR SPECIAL, which made an appearance in our area on Monday [5/7] as it headed back to ALTOONA, PA from its duties hosting guests and dignitaries at CHURCHILL DOWNS.

ROBERT A. SHOOK caught the NS OCS at one of his favorite photo locations–under the George Westinghouse Memorial Bridge.

TONY KIMMEL caught the OCS closing in on its home base in the Miscellaneous Building as it was passing ALTO TOWER for perhaps the last time. ALTO is closing very soon. That will be a sad day indeed.

TONY had earlier captured the NS 8103 NORFOLK AND WESTERN Heritage unit on an NS 862 loaded coal train at CASSANDRA, PA.

Closer to home, HARRY GAYDOSZ was in NEW GALILEE, PA when the NS 8104 LEHIGH VALLEY Heritage unit passed through heading an NS 776 loaded coal train. BTW, for those fans who were positioned at ROCHESTER, PA awaiting the NS 776, the engineer of that westbound who blocked your shot told us that he did in fact feel bad about doing so. But he ‘had the signal’ and so was required to move east.

Finally, TOM BOYLAN offers this shot of the NS 8100 leading an NS 688 coal train passing the old White/Westinghouse plant in MANSFIELD, OH
Innkeeper Note: We have LOTS MORE photos and news items to share. Stay tuned! Most of our digital problems are resolved, so we’ll be adding updates on a daily basis. THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE during our outage!

A MOST Unusual Load…
JACK KUIPHOFF was in position for this special move on Thursday [4/12] when this most unusual freight train came past his house in WEST NEWTON, PA. JACK lives at M.P. 294.5 on the CSX Keystone Sub, about an hour and a half ‘track time’ east of The FALLSTON FLAGSTOP Railfan B&B [we're located at M.P. 29.5 on the CSX Pittsburgh Sub].
Following is part of the CSX Bulletin Order which accompanied this move…
W94011 (no restrictions) is moving from New Castle to Roselake and should be treated like an intermodal train. Be aware of the location of this train as
he travels across your territory. Crews are to be called at least 1 hour prior to the arrival of the crew change at New Castle, Crestline and Avon.
Any unplanned stops will require immediate attention/response to restart the train. Roselake will need to communicate with the BN to make sure we have a
proper transfer of equipment (power stays with the train).
A move of a Gun barrel previously on the USS Arizona being shipped to Phoenix, AZ for new WWII memorial/museum.
Here’s JACK’s note with the video link…
Got it past the house yesterday, but I have no idea where it is today…
